Zacharia Mwangi Njeru

Zacharia Mwangi Njeru is a Kenyan politician who was recently appointed to the position of Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Water, Sanitation & Irrigation in Kenya under William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration. Prior to his appointment to Cabinet, Mr. Njeru served as a Sub County Administrator in the County Government of Nakuru, a Nominated Councillor in the defunct Municipal Council of Nakuru, and as the Chairman of the Finance and Public Health Committees. Previously, he held managerial posts at Madison Insurance and Blue Shield Insurance.

Early Life and Education

Zacharia Mwangi was born in 1966 in Bondeni slum in Nakuru County. So in terms of his age, he is currently 58 years old in 2024. He went to Bondeni Primary School in Nakuru, and later to Nakuru Day Secondary School and he finished in Nyandarua High School. In 2015, he enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration program at Mount Kenya University after completing his BSc in Information Science at Moi University. Additionally, he has taken classes at the Kenya School of Government.

Career

Mr. Zachariah Mwangi Njeru is the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Water, Sanitation & Irrigation in Kenya. With a career spanning over 28 years in the public and private sector, Mr. Njeru has a wealth of experience in public sector administration, intergovernmental relations, public health, public finance, stakeholder engagement, mainstreaming governance and national values within public service, as well as business management and development.

Prior to his appointment to Cabinet, Mr. Njeru served as a Sub County Administrator in the County Government of Nakuru, a Nominated Councilor in the defunct Municipal Council of Nakuru, and as the Chairman of the Finance and Public Health Committees. Previously, he held managerial posts at Madison Insurance and Blue Shield Insurance.

Between 2008 and 2013, Njeru was a nominated councilor in the municipal council of Nakuru and served as chair finance and general purpose committee. In 2010 he was elected chairman of the public health and AIDS committee of the Council.

A hustler, Njeru started his work life as a sales admin at DT Dobbie in 1995 before he shifted attention to hawk insurance policies. He served as an executive at Madison Insurance in Eldoret (1998 to 2000) before crossing to Blueshield as branch manager in Meru.

Later he was promoted to become the company’s regional manager Rift Valley (2003 to 2007), before dabbling in politics.

Since 2015, Zacharia Njeru had been a sub-county administrator in Nakuru County. He is now the first full cabinet minister from Nakuru County. In 2022 he was nominated as the new Cabinet Secretary of Lands Housing and Urban Development. In early October 2023 Mr. Njeru gets reshuffled to the Ministry of Water, Sanitation & Irrigation where he serves as Cabinet Secretary

Mr. Njeru’s vast experience in management, public administration, and urban development institutions allow him a nuanced view of the interventions required to resolve the complex issues related to land administration and management as well as the emerging urgent needs within the urban development sector. He truly appreciates the complexities of governance in a devolved context and the imperative for collaboration in achieving national development priorities.
