There’s Never Been Something like This Before: Embu Residents on Kenya Kwanza’s County Economic Forum

Ruto in Embu Economic Forum

On 20th May 2022, Deputy President William Ruto gathered with thousands of residents including boda boda riders, small scale traders, opinion shapers, and local leaders from Embu County. Accompanying him were county leaders including UDA’s gubernatorial aspirant Cecily Mbarire.

Cecily posed a question to attendees of the forum, whether they will be voting for Ruto in the coming elections. Elated residents shouted “Yes” with a lot of passion and assurance.

Many followers of the Deputy President have praised the ingenious economic forums led by William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua. They say they have never seen something like this before, where a president sits down and takes notes as residents say what they want from Ruto’s government.

Ruto is in a spree of countrywide economic forums in which his team collects views from each county. This will culminate in a comprehensive economic charter that will be signed between Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition and each county.

The charter will contain projects, economic policies, and ideas that would be implemented if Kenya Kwanza clinches power. This move binds the central government with the county governments, ensuring that there is commitment from the top leaders on key issues affecting people.

The economic team led by David Ndii, Moses Kuria and other leaders will come up with the economic charter to be unveiled in the next 45 days.

“We have seen people addressing us at the rooftops, but we have not seen them come to listen to our issues, and as Embu residents, we are going to support the leader who has listened to us and who we will be signing a contract with, and that is William Ruto, he will be the next president of Kenya,” said Mbarire.

Many people are happy to see a new style of politics where leaders make agreements with the people before elections, rather than striking power-sharing deals in which the voters are not involved.

Today the Kenya Kwanza team will hold their economic forum in Murang’a County, where large crowds have gathered to affirm their support for Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
