Susan Wafula

In the recently released list of 22 Cabinet Secretaries, there are names that many people would not have predicted. One of them is Susan Wafula, who has been appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Health.

Before today’s appointments, Dr. William Ruto had made it clear that he would not select anyone from the opposition to join his Cabinet. But one name remains a surprise to many people – Susan Wafula. She replaces Mutahi Kagwe at Afya House.

But who is she, really?

Susan Nakhumicha Wafula could be one of the few professionals to have been named in Ruto’s largely political cabinet. She holds a PhD in Business Management, Logistics & Supply Chain.

Wafula has worked at Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies & was since 2017 the Head of Supply Chain at UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences.

She ran for Tranzoia Woman Representative under Ford Kenya and lost to UDA candidate Lilian Chebet Siyoi.

In her LinkedIn account, Susan Wafula describes herself as “a strategic and seasoned supply chain professional with more than 15 years of global & multicultural experience in Agile and Intelligent Supply Chain and Operations in the healthcare industry with an excellent track record of providing an optimized, cognitive, seamless and globally integrated End to End Supply Chain solution.”

Wafula also worked under various donor guidelines like UCSF, USAID and Global Programs.

She also has procurement Expertise in Pharmaceuticals including medicines against HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria | HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria supply management including development of Procurement and Supply Management (PSM) plans in compliance with GF and other donor requirements.

Furthermore, she has experience in procurement of medical equipment and devices, Stationery, Printing works, logistics/transport services and consulting services

Wafula previously worked as a Procurement and Logistics Manager at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital Group and as a Procurement Intern at the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency.

She also holds a Master’s Degree in Science – Supply Chain, and as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Procurement and Management.

Considering all these professional qualifications and experiences, there is no doubt Ruto expects Susan Wafula to solve the KEMSA-type challenges faced by the Ministry of Health (MoH).
