Leadership Attributes of Kyoichi Tanada

Kyoichi Tanada is the president of Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd. He assumed the office’s responsibilities as a leader in July 2009 and since then up to date his leadership qualities have enabled him to run Toyota Motor Corporation in Thailand very effectively. What made him to gain promotion till he became the president of Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd is the mix of leadership skills and attributes he has. He has proved to be a successful leader since 2009 and he is someone all leaders wish to emulate. In order for a company’s new and aspiring employees to be promoted in their leadership positions, they ought to demonstrate good leadership qualities.

1) Motivating Followers

Leadership theories present various aspects of leaders that make them effective in leadership. For instance, action-related theory of leadership requires a leader to help his subordinates to understand the nature of their tasks and enable them overcome the problems associated with each task (Rollinson, 2008). A leader should also be able to build teamwork among his subordinates. This attribute is well manifested by Tanada in his leadership. He works well with his team and provides them with necessary information to enable them achieve organizational goals through an effective performance of their tasks. He encourages teamwork and does not single himself out as a manager but works closely with members of his subordinate staff so as to enable them feel supported and motivated. 2) Good Relationship with Followers

Another outstanding quality which has made Tanada effective in his leadership is his ability to relate well with his followers. The path-goal theory highlights that a good leader should relate well with his subordinate staff and reward them (Rollinson, 2008). As a result, he is allowed to continue with his role as a leader.  Leaders who don’t relate well with their subordinates are often at the risk of losing their jobs. Tanada relates well with his staff and that is the reason why he has maintained his leadership position for a long time.

3) Trustworthy

A good effective leader is also someone who should be able to trust and value others. This is a characteristic of Tanada. He often respects the view of other people especially his subordinate staff and trusts them. These aspects always enable leaders to perform their delegation duties effectively and get the work done efficiently by the subordinates. This is in accordance with the transformational theory of leadership which requires that leaders should have interest in trust and should value others.

4) Delegating Roles

The transformational theory also holds that leaders should practice effective delegation, develop their team’s potential, be approachable, disregard status and allow for scrutiny of traditional approaches (Jackson, 2003). Tanada exhibits these attributes by being transparent, honest, consultative, involving, decisive, team oriented, creative and a good communicator. These attributes always make a leader like Tanada to gain trust from his subordinates who will then follow the leader’s instructions promptly in order to attain each task’s goals and achieve organizational goals as well.

5) Visionary

One of the attributes which a leader should also posses so as to enable him be effective and gain promotion or maintain his leadership role is to be visionary (French and Simpson, 2006). A leader with vision always focuses on the possible position of his company in the future and works hard to reach there. He therefore sets the vision and attracts the right workforcte to make it a reality. Tanada always displayed visionary leadership by forecasting the future of Toyota Motor Corporation in terms of performance and achievement and engaging his team in a attaining those achievements.

6) Other Qualities

Other qualities that leaders should possess so as to perform effectively and be promoted include commitment, confidence, ambition, loyalty and enthusiasm. Tanada possesses all these qualities, hence has been able to climb the ladder of leadership over the years. He has always been committed to his duties and never failed in any of them. He is also loyal to Toyota Motor Corporation. This enables him to work well with his team towards the achievement of the organization’s objectives, hence eliminating the risks of losing his job. Enthusiasm, confidence and ambition have also enabled Tanada to be aggressive as a manager and set goals for his team.


It is can be noted in this paper that leaders such as Kyoichi Tanada posses unique leadership attributes such as delegation and teamwork abilities, communication skills, negotiation abilities, ambitiousness, tolerance, trust and being visionary. These qualities can be developed though training and development training programs which are supported by various theories of leadership. Leadership qualities can therefore be improved or developed though training, learning and development.
