Former Tourism CS Najib Balala has arrived at the Malindi Law Courts where he is expected to be arraigned over corruption allegations.

Najib Balala has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegations of corruption while he was serving as Tourism Cabinet Secretary under Uhuru Kenyatta administration.

EACC detectives raided Balala’s home in Malindi today and arrested the former Tourism CS to face 10 charges relating to the construction of the Sh8.5bn Utalii College, Kilifi campus, anti-graft agency confirms.

Balala is arrested together with four other ministry officials over the alleged procurement fraud.

If the allegations are anything to go by, then the former CS might have engaged in a fraudulent scheme where the Kenya Utalii College was paid KSH8.5 billion by the Tourism Fund.

Many questions have been raised by Neticizens after the arrests as people question the timing of the arrest.

Azimio diehard supporter Gabriel Oguda wrote on twitter: “Tomorrow is Saturday. Monday is a holiday. Tuesday is a holiday. Najib Balala will spend Christmas in prison, and might see New Year fireworks from across his cell window too”

Some suggest that the arrest of Najib Balala is a ploy to silence Uhuru Kenyatta as he plans a political comeback in Mount Kenya.

“The arrest of najib balala in my opinion is KK trying to silence uhuru Kenyatta” Read another tweet.

Kenyans ask hard questions on why Matiangi was arrested in a similar manner, yet Moses Kuria and Davis Chirchir haven’t. Matiangi was arrested during the time of protests led by Azimio, but charges were dropped just after the protests were called off.

Former Finance CS Henry Rotich was also arrested by Uhuru Kenyatta’s government over corruption allegations and William Ruto’s government discharged him from all allegations.

Based on these inconsistencies, Kenyans on social media believe that the government is using the EACC as a political tool to silence opposition.

The arrest of Najib Balala comes just as Jubilee Party is planning a series of rallies in Mount Kenya under the stewardship of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. The former Tourism CS is a close ally of Uhuru Kenyatta and is believed to be an influential member of the opposition.

Do you think these arrests are genuine, or just a cover-up for a failed regime?
