Earlier this morning, Raila Odinga named Martha Karua as his running mate for the upcoming elections. He also “appointed” Kalonzo Musyoka as the Chief Cabinet Secretary for his shadow government. Shortly afterwards, Kalonzo Musyoka announced his bid to run for the Presidency himself. He named Andrew Leteipa Sunkuli as his running mate. So who is Andrew Sunkuli?
Andrew Leteipa Sunkuli is currently the Chairman of Mara Education Trust, a non-governmental organization that supports children through education. He is also an entrepreneur, author and educationist.
Sunkuli defines himself as a jack of all trades. He is a trained teacher who is “not wholly defined by my training as a teacher or a publisher; nor by my passion for writing and creating things from nothing.”
Andrew has until today been vying for the Narok Senatorial seat on a Wiper ticket. He now leaves his previous plans to join Kalonzo in the quest for the top seat.
As an ordinary citizen who has been preoccupied with his writing, education and livestock farming businesses, he is now joining many other ordinary Kenyans who are eyeing top seats in the fast-evolving democratic political environment in Kenya.
Just today, Isaac Ruto appointed little known 29-year-old Doris Chepkoech as his running mate for the gubernatorial seat in Bomet. UDA members also nominated a 24-year-old girl, Linet Jepkorir (‘Toto’), to run for the women representative position for Bomet County.
Raila Odinga also chose Martha Karua as his running mate for the presidency on a show of solidarity with the marginalized female gender.
Another marginalized group, the Maasai pastoralist community, will have one of their own on the list of people who are emerging from little known groups to become great leaders.
Reacting to Kalonzo’s call, Ole Sunkuli said, “The answer is yes. With all humility, therefore, I accept the nomination to be running mate of Wiper Democratic Movement.”
“I left my livestock unattended to, my senate constituents unattended to. I have not made any formal communication to my campaign team that I am here.”
This sounds like the story of Jesus disciplines who were instructed to stop fishing because they would henceforth become ‘fishers of men.”
Many people in the country are keenly interested in the two front runners for the presidential position, William Ruto of Kenya Kwanza and Raila Odinga of Azimio la Umoja; but the story of this young man who has left his livestock unattended to attend to his new national duties will remain an inspiring story for everyone who has big dreams.
